Arla Foods Group is a Danish-Swedish[2][3] multinational co-operative based in Viby, Denmark. It is the fifth biggest dairy company in the world and the largest producer of dairy products in Scandinavia and United Kingdom.[4][5]

Arla Foods was formed as the result of a merger between the Swedish dairy co-operative Arla and the Danish dairy company MD Foods on 17 April The name Arla derives from the same word as the English word 'early' and is an archaic Swedish term for 'early (in the morning)'.

In the s, dairy farmers in Sweden and Denmark formed small co-operatives to invest in common dairy production facilities. The first dairy co-operative was established in Sweden at Stora Arla Gård in Västmanland in under the name of Arla Mejeriförening,[6] and the first Danish cooperative dairy was established in Hjedding, outside Ølgod, Southern Jutland in [7]

Genom demokratin i den kooperativa företagsformen har dem inflytande i enlighet med den gamla principen: ett medlem, enstaka röst.

Arla Foods has entered the plant-based market with a new brand JÖRĐ, featuring three dairy alternative drinks in cartons.

Arla’s Senior Innovation Manager, Vadim Smolenkin, spoke to Elotalk about the significance of the launch both to the company and the market.

“At Arla, we cater for all consumers,” explains Vadim. “We see that % of consumers buy plant-based food alongside dairy products. On
top of that, the vegan and vegetarian segments also continue to evolve. At Arla we produce products for everyone, dairy and non-dairy, to
enjoy side by side.”

The first three products under the new JÖRĐ brand have been introduced across Denmark and will be launched in the UK later this year,
expanding to Sweden and other countries in Arla is introducing a range of dairy-free plantbased drinks featuring: JÖRĐ Oat, JÖRĐ Barley
and JÖRĐ Hemp, presented in 1 liter Pure-Pak® Sense cartons with Natural Brown Board. All the new products are organic and contain only natural and Nordic ingredients.

The new brand name JÖRĐ comes from Norse mythology. JÖRĐ was a goddess who was the personification of Mother Nature. This ‘mother
